Story identification: Harnessing the Gods in a small town
The story I'm trying to identify is about an engineer in a small town. He accidentally crafts a device that harnesses the energy of people's thoughts to power whatever they think of at the time. The main character uses the device to enter the minds of people in the nearby town and stir up some mischief, and most of the townsfolk (including the hero and a girl) are afraid of him and the device. The hero spends some time in jail after being caught, and is then hired as a consultant on the machine to one of the town's richest people.
It's possible that it might be the first part of a trilogy. I'd appreciate it if someone can help me identify it.

This is The Secret of Life, by Eric Flint.
Sam Beckett is the first member of his family to be born in 20,000 BC, and is dragged home by his grandfather to raise him and carry out his grandfather's dying wish: that he prove worthy of the powers of the mysterious golden Scarab that passed to him on his grandfather's death. But the job of guardian is not one that Sam feels destined for, and he is not especially interested in exploring his strange new abilities. Soon, however, the world begins to change. Tastes shift. Animals begin to change into different animals. New foods emerge and old food disappears. Ancient languages that were once spoken in forgotten cities suddenly become known again. Scientists and historians claim that this is the dawn of a new age, and the situation forces Sam to come to grips with his abilities.
It was released as a trilogy, so I'd first read the first book (The Secret of Life), then the second (The Planet of Fear) and lastly the third (The World of the Extra-Terrestrials).
